1. European Romantic, pseudo-medieval fiction with a prevailing atmosphere of mystery and terror. Such novels were often set in castles or monasteries equipped with subterranean passages, dark battlements, and hidden panels, and they had plots involving ghosts, madness, outrage, superstition, and revenge.
2. Gothic novel or Gothic romance, a story of terror and suspense, usually set in a gloomy old castle or monastery (hence ‘Gothic’, a term applied to medieval architecture and thus associated in the 18th century with superstition).
3. It is a type of novel that flourished in the late 18th and early 19th cent. in England. Gothic romances were mysteries, often involving the supernatural and heavily tinged with horror, and they were usually set against dark backgrounds of medieval ruins and haunted castles.
4. Characteristics of gothic stories:
An atmosphere of gloom, terror, or mystery.
Elements of the uncanny (unheimlich) that challenge reality, including mysterious events .
An exotic setting isolated in time or space from contemporary life, often a ruined mansion or castle. 
Events, often violent or macabre, that cannot be hidden or rationalized despite the efforts of the narrator.
A disturbed or unnatural relation between the orders of things that are usually separate, such as life and death, good and evil, dream life and reality, or rationality and madness.
A hidden or double reality beneath the surface of what at first appears to be a single narrative.
